Shipston 2’s Ram into Top Spot with fantastic away Victory

Shipston 2’s stormed into top spot with an away win at old top spot holders’ Newbold On Avon with a hard fought 13-15 victory. With perfect Rugby weather Shipston managed to score in the first 7 minutes with a great switch move in the centres with Ollie Morris coming from Full Back position to score in the far right corner.Scrum half George Cowper kicked a difficult conversion to give Shipston a 7 point lead. This was answered within minutes by a converted try from Newbold and the game looked set to be tough…and it was!

It followed with good old fashioned end to end play and Shipston gave away a number of penalties, one of which was kicked for 3 points by Newbold. Just before half time and with a dashing run by Jack McMullen past 2 Newbold players, the ball was popped to Ben Haines who managed to avert 2 further tackles and managed a full on side step to push over the line ramming Shipston into lead with a score of 10-12.
The second half saw an ever determined Shipston trying to win the ball in the tough malls and rucks against the very experienced Newbold forwards but to no avail and a penalty was given against for going in the side.

Newbold opted to kick and the score was 13-12 in the last 10 minutes. More forward play ensued and Shipston managed to apply pressure on the much larger and experienced pack of Newbold and won a penalty in front of the posts which was easily kicked through by Cowper giving a Rams 13-15 lead. The final few minutes saw much nail biting from injured Captain Pete Buchannan (back injury), Guy (now subbed with a dead leg) and Tofty (back injury) on the sideline but the final whistle blew with Shipston taking the top spot.

All the players played out of their skins and it was almost impossible to choose a man of the match so we have chosen a few:

·
George Cowper for fantastic kicking and making of play in the number 9 jersey
·
Jack McMullen for some fantastic runs and also for getting up from a hell of an illegal tackle only to fire back with a killer tackle on the offender within 2 minutes!!
·
Guy Loveridge for fantastic fight in the rucks and line outs
·
Ben Haines for basically being a bull in a china shop!

Shipston II -  24    Newbold III - 32

Saturday 17th September 2011

A stormy and windy day at the Mayo Road home ground saw Shipston II defeated by a mixture of Newbold I,II and III but not without an exciting fight from all of the Rams. The first half looked promising for Shipston who had a much smaller pack than Newbold but used big man Jack Coupland to break through the Newbold back row twice in 20 minutes for two tries. George Cowper managed to slot one conversion through against a very tricky swirling wind to put Shipston 12 points up. Then following a tackling error in the shipston defence, just before half time Newbold came back and scored a converted try.

The game was really on for Shipston in the second half as fresh Newbold players came into the pack but Shipston did not give up and nearly pushed the maul over the line but instead conceded a penalty. These penalties seemed to come quick, fast and very questionable against Shipston for the remainder of the game which was frustrating for the Rams but seemed to strangely benefit the Newbold team.

Determined to right the wrongs of the referee decisions, Shipston managed another two tries with Jack Coupland getting his hat-trick and James McCloud his second of the season. Unfortunately this was not enough after a flurry of Newbold attacks left Shipston 8 points down as the final whistle went. Man of the match went to Ben (Hainer) Haines for his many “rhino like” charging runs into the Newbold pack and special thanks from the crowd must go to flanker Phil Newberry for his “beautiful angelic” shouting at both the Newbold team and at times the referee.

Saturday 10th September 2011
Shipston 2s  31 - 12  Moreton Marauders

The first game saw the 2’s with a new Captain but familiar face, Pete Buchannan. Aiming to win the league this year Pete fielded a mix of last years players, plus a few new faces, to lead Shipston 2’s to a more than convincing 31-15 victory against new team in the league, Moreton Marauders from Moreton Morrell, on their maiden appearance. On a warm, blustery but dry day, the conditions were by no means idyllic leading into the new season but with a number of the Shipston squad eager for the game following 2 months of hard training and conditioning with the 1st Team, the determination from Shipston was evident from the kick off.

Moreton looked quite spritely with some young and fast backs and some good defence but Shipston absolutely dominated the forward play in nearly all of the rucks, mauls and scrums. The first try came from Shipston winger Ollie Morris following a fantastic break through the Moreton back line which deserved a “Swan Dive” but unfortunately didn’t materialise. This was converted into the strong wind slickly as ever by Richie Brian. Moreton replied with a converted try after making the most of an error in the Shipston backs to level the score.

An almost “goose step” run by Pete Buchannan and a pop to Matt (Tofty) Tofts looked set for another try but was held up by the Moreton defence over the line. Four scrums and “hold ups” then ensued and after a further scrum, Shipston finally bulldozed the pack over the line and another try was scored by Steve Unit at No. 8. The second half saw tries from Richie Brian, an excellent breakthrough try by George Cowper and a final try in the last play by Brian (Dangerous) Smith. During the game we also saw an over-keen Richard Brian try to score beyond the dead ball line and onto the 3’s pitch and last year’s captain Guy (Guypher) Loveridge with an excellent drop-goal attempt straight off of his forehead much to the pleasure of the crowd! Man of the match went to Rob (Wobbles) Wilson for his ravid dog like demeanour in the rucks and mauls and special thanks go to Jamie (Pubby) Sinclair for playing 50 minutes in 2nd row with what turned out to be a broken elbow! )
