Stratford Legends 10
Shipston Veterans 24
This game between two old rivals was only decided in the last few minutes when Shipston ran in two late tries. The first half was an attritional affair with great defence from both teams. The legends cleared up at the front of the lineouts through Dave Robbins and gained lots of ground from driving mauls. Shipston centre Carl Hamilton opened the scoring when he broke through the Stratford lines and ran in from 40 metres. Half time saw the visitors 5-0 ahead. An overthrow at a Shipston lineout deep in the Stratford half allowed the home team to break out through Simon Balwyn and then Antony Pritchard. Ever youthful Robbins was on hand to receive the final pass and level the scores. The legends then took the lead with a break down the right wing and a score in the corner although there was a slight hint of a forward pass in the build up. A crunching tackle by Hamilton on his opposite man in the centres dislodged the ball on half way. Ever alert outside centre Dave Graham scooped up the ball and raced away to level the scores again. Shipston regained the lead when Brian Hobill missed with a drop goal attempt but prop Ian Petty, following up way in front of the kicker, was on hand to touch down when the Stratford winger made a hash of touching the ball down. In injury time Hobill put in a perfectly weighted crossfield kick and left wing John Devine took the ball on the bounce to score. Hobill added the extras.
